When in Sri Lanka, one must Sri Lank

October 2016 - I did the best thing ever, I made the decision to travel alone - for 8 days- to Sri Lanka.

Was it a bit risky? probably...
Did I care? nope

I stayed in a lovely little spot right down south of the island, a little spot called Unawatuna (pronounced a little like you wanna a tuna?) its about a 15/20 minute tuk tuk ride from the more well know Galle Fort and Jungle Beach.

Evenings at the hotel

When your hotel's location is everything you'd hoped for, there is not much that made me want to leave this happy place on a day to day basis... so I didn't... that was the one thing about travelling alone - there was no pressure to wake up at a specific time, do site seeing things, you can eat, sleep, walk, read, write, swim  when you feel like it- the only thing to consider is: do you feel like it ? #allaboutme

I found myself sitting in, what felt like a small piece of heaven, on the beach during tropical rain under my sun umbrella with my book. Bliss.

The sand (which was shipped in from Colombo  after a big storm washed Unawatuna's sand away) is just off white and the water clear and warm..
A massive highlight for me was the tourists, I think I am not the only person who travelled there alone - but the tourist/ people watching  brought me so much entertainment!

Some of my people watching highlights:

Picture the scene, beautiful beach, people enjoying their view of the ocean- when a lady arrives with her yoga mat and sits at the waters edge in her bikini and  begins having a  full on meditative yoga session (if I have to picture those poses in revealing bikini forever, I  feel you should have to too) - please also note this session included sound effects.

I met another single girl travelling on her own, who had to consult the fairy's every now and then for advise, which was highly entertaining. The people who sold picnic blankets/ table clothes stood in  the wind wafting their materials in your face hoping or purchase - if you make eye contact- you're stuffed ! They come back every day in case you change your mind the next day, the men peacocking along the beach, the tuk tuks narrowly missing the things they drive passed by millimetres, screaming unsuspecting people when locals throw a monkey in your lap for photo op's.  #theseareafewofmyfavouritethings

Honestly one of my favourite holidays, not sure it was being alone and all my time to myself, or if it was the prettiness of Sri Lanka- but probably a mixture of both. I'm not sure I'd recommend travelling alone as a woman to Sri Lanka, it does get a bit much, you'll have to have the proverbial bat ready at all times.

Being a South African I naturally am quite aware at all times of my safety and  the things around me... my advice to anyone (of the female variety) travelling to this beautiful place, would be to be aware and just be wise. Other than that - I'd recommend this as a cost effective holiday.
